6 Simple Lifestyle Changes to Prevent Varicose Veins

There are many different factors that can cause varicose veins, including genetics, age, pregnancy and lifestyle habits. While varicose veins can’t always be prevented, there are some easy lifestyle modifications you can make to help minimize your risk of developing them. Dr. Ramaswami recommends trying to incorporate these simple changes into your daily life to help prevent varicose veins. 

1. Keeping a Healthy Weight

Excess weight puts additional pressure on your veins, making it harder for blood to flow properly. Maintaining a healthy weight helps to reduce strain on your legs and prevents veins from becoming swollen or enlarged. Pair a balanced diet with regular movement to help keep your veins in good shape.

2. Getting Regular Exercise

Regular exercise not only helps you to maintain a healthy weight but can also promote healthy circulation, which is great for your vein health. Keep in mind that this can be as simple as going for a daily walk or doing mat exercises like Pilates or yoga – you don’t need to spend hours in the gym to reap the benefits of regular movement.

3. Avoid Prolonged Sitting or Standing

Sitting or standing for long periods can cause blood to pool in your legs, increasing the risk of varicose veins. If you work in an office, set a timer to take a quick stretch or walk every hour or so. On the other hand, if your job requires standing, try to shift your weight from one leg to the other or take breaks to sit when possible. Small changes like these can make a big impact on circulation.

4. Don’t Cross Your Legs 

Crossing your legs for extended periods of time can restrict blood flow and increase pressure on your veins. Instead, try to sit with both feet flat on the ground to help maintain healthy circulation.

To counter this, focus on eating a balanced diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein, while cutting back on processed and salty foods. Staying hydrated also helps to balance your sodium levels and promotes better circulation.
