5 Tips to Prepare for Your Varicose Vein Treatment

Whether you are planning for thermal ablation or chemical ablation to treat varicose veins, there are a number of things you can do now to help you prepare for your upcoming vein treatment to ensure optimal results. Here, Dr. Ramaswami outlines five easy steps you can take to get ready for your upcoming varicose vein treatment.

1. Review Medications with Dr. Ramaswami

Some medications, including certain vitamins and herbal supplements, can affect blood clotting and may need to be paused before your vein treatment. Blood thinners, aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs are examples of medications that might need to be adjusted. Be sure you review your list of medications and supplements that you are currently taking with Dr. Ramaswami prior to your treatment so that he can provide recommendations on medication adjustments.

2. Arrange for Someone to Drive You Home

Even though Dr. Ramaswami utilizes minimally invasive varicose vein treatment methods, it is still a good idea to arrange for someone to drive you home from your procedure. You might experience some discomfort or drowsiness from the local anesthesia used during vein ablation. Having a friend or family member drive you will help to ensure you get home safely and comfortably and without the stress of navigating traffic or directions.

3. Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco Use

In the days leading up to your treatment, Dr. Ramaswami recommends that you avoid alcohol and tobacco use, as both can interfere with your body’s ability to heal. Alcohol can thin your blood, while  tobacco use can constrict blood vessels and impair circulation, potentially slowing down your recovery process or interfering with your final results.

Similarly, Dr. Ramaswami recommends that you continue to refrain from alcohol and tobacco use directly after your vein treatment to help optimize your body’s healing process.

4. Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing

On the day of your varicose vein ablation appointment, wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily put on and taken off. Not only will this help to make you more comfortable, but wearing loose clothing will also allow plenty of room for any bandages or compression garments that Dr. Ramaswami may send you home with.

Additionally, avoid applying any skincare products to the treatment area, as certain products may cause irritation or otherwise interfere with your varicose vein treatment.

5. Plan to Take It Easy After Your Treatment

While you should be able to resume most normal activities shortly after your varicose vein treatment, Dr. Ramaswami recommends that patients plan to take it easy for the rest of the day following their appointment. Avoid strenuous activities and give yourself permission to simply rest and relax. Elevating your legs when sitting or lying down can also help reduce swelling and promote better circulation.
